Death Dinner: Curated by Raquel & Dina

  • Dance of Life Yoga Studio 250 George Street Fitzroy VIC 3065 Australia (map)

ABOUT THE EVENING

Join Dina Smirnova and Raquel Woods for a guided curation in cuisine and communal conversation around death and dying.  This community event is organised and led by two women interested in the cycle of death and transformation, bringing their experiences to offer a safe and supportive environment to consciously dive deeper into an area of taboo.

Through storytelling and personal encounters, we have an opportunity to draw upon our own experiences of death and grief, be witnessed in community, and share food with intention and presence. It is also a celebration of how making peace with death can move us forward and inform us of how to create a new life for ourselves.

The evening will be a progressive sensory experience and include:

+ An exploration of new and old concepts including a guided meditation inspired by ancient Tibetan Buddhist practices to bring us into the present
+ An intentional, facilitated conversation around death and dying
+ A delicious tapas menu to ponder the nature of transition through the senses
+ An interactive and communal experience, where we will be guided to share, explore, and find stillness in the deeper listening of Spirit

FOCUS FOR THE EVENING: “MY LAST SUPPER”

What would be your last supper? Would you eat the food slowly? Who would you share it with? As part of this evening’s contemplation, we ask each participant to bring their favourite dish to share with the group.

WHAT TO BRING

+ A small vegetarian meal to share with the group
+ Notebook and pen (if you’d like to jot down any thoughts)
+ Your intention

IMPORTANT NOTES

Food will be predominantly vegetarian and gluten free.  Although we will do our best to accommodate your dietary requests, we cannot guarantee there will not be cross-contamination or trace ingredients (we will try our best though!).

You are free to BYO non-alcoholic beverages and anything you need to ensure your comfort.

As this space offers and encourages vulnerability and a place to be seen and witnessed, we ask willing participants to speak from their experience rather than give advice to others, come with an open mind, and be present and responsible for their own needs and self-care. Please be respectful and understanding of the needs of others.

If you are personally struggling or have a history of mental health challenges, we ask you to seek professional support and speak to one of the facilitators beforehand to see if this space is suitable for you. Please note we are not qualified health practitioners and can only work within our skill sets.

ABOUT DINA
Dina originally comes from Baku, Azerbaijan and moved to the United States shortly after she was born. She began choreographing at eleven years old, teaching at fourteen, and has been performing, creating, and teaching movement ever since.

Now based in Australia, Dina serves the community by facilitating yoga, meditation, and movement on a weekly basis and hosting specialised workshops.  She is particularly passionate about co-facilitating interdisciplinary collaborations as a means to encourage her students to explore and deepen their spiritual practices and understanding of energy.

In addition to being a teacher, Dina is also a dance artist, energetic healing practitioner, and experiential life coach.  Most recently, Dina completed a death doula training with Denise Love and was very inspired by her experience to create a space that enables others to explore and normalise the topic of death.

ABOUT RAQUEL
Raquel sees her life as a pray and continues to refine her life, where she is being called and moved to make a positive impact. She is often found writing, developing her craft as an artist and supporting the 13 Moons Blood Mystery, a year-long women’s journey.

Through her own relationship and struggle with the passing of loved ones, Raquel brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and understanding to those she meets. She holds a deep space of presence and safety to support transitions, thresholds and places of uncertainty. This powerful container allows participants to feel seen and heard, while creating new perspectives, choices and possibilities to actively participate and contribute to life in a meaningful way.

Raquel loves bringing people together to weave magic, stories, connection and share food. She draws from her path and travels of community development, leadership, facilitation, authentic relating, event management, energy tools and the creative arts. Raquel has also represented Australia and the Commonwealth in recognition for her efforts in personal development.
