Katonah Yoga, Meditation & PranayamA

As a student of Katonah Yoga since 2013 and a yoga teacher since 2011, I am excited to be Melbourne’s first certified Katonah Yoga teacher.

After studying Nevine Michaan’s theory at the Katonah Yoga Center & The Studio in New York, it is with great excitement that I begin to weave this beautiful material into my teachings.

What is Katonah Yoga?

Katonah Yoga® is a syncretic Hatha yoga practice developed by Nevine Michaan over 45 years. She and her teachers incorporate classical Hatha yoga with Taoist theory, geometry, magic, mythology, metaphor, and imagination — in a practical framework designed to potentiate personal and communal well-being. Framing the practice, maps of time and personal space are defined and refined. Themes using asana as origami, manipulating form for function, and developing a sense of personal measure are incorporated in Katonah Yoga practices.

Katonah Yoga is organised around three principles of esoteric dialogue:

  • All polarities are mediated by trinity.

  • The universe has pattern, pattern belies intelligence; by virtue of repetition there is potential for insight.

  • Disciplined techniques are organised for revelation through revolutions.

I am currently offering 1:1 diagnostic body readings and therapeutic privates in my home studio and via Zoom.

  • A diagnostic body reading is a snapshot of the body in the present moment. It is a tool used in Katonah Yoga to understand how the practitioner is embodying themselves in time and space.

A single body part is a fractal of the whole, whereby information is revealed. This idea is understood pragmatically and experientially as the Katonah maps are used as an overlay to create a portal of insight into your potential. We will also look at the three floors of the body to further discover the wisdom that the body holds, and put you on a grid where you’ll experience another dimension of yourself.

Expect lots of hands-on adjustments and learn how to orient yourself so that you can reference your body’s potential to find joy.

  • In Katonah Yoga, we use the metaphor “practicing yoga to clean out each room in the house” as a reference to the body. We don’t just want to live in one room (or on one floor) of our house; rather, we want to occupy all of the space that is available to us. Yet, the reality is that most of us don’t! We tend to stay where is comfortable; in our practice this might show up as a habit, a foible, or a tendency to move towards certain postures and away from others.

In a Katonah therapeutic private, you can expect to clean out the congestion from each room in your house. As a result, you’ll move currency in your body, with newfound access to your entire abode and your blind spots. You’ll learn what information yoga poses reveal, play with the concept of “yoga as origami”, and discover how to use archetypal forms in an asana practice to your advantage. You’ll also receive lots of hands-on adjustments as well as meditation & pranayama guidance, all while having a new experience of yourself.

  • While your home practice is for learning to tune your instrument, a Katonah group class is an environment where you get to bring your instrument and play with the rest of the symphony.

Each class is 90 minutes, taught in a workshop-style setting. Unlike “normal” yoga classes, there is no hierarchy, lineage or guruism. Every Katonah class is taught in a spirit of open-sourced information, where there exists open dialogue and freedom to explore your interior inside of a nurturing, communal setting.

I am currently taking interest for in-person and online group classes. Please contact me directly to register your interest and share with me what most piques your curiosity about Katonah Yoga!
